  • Born in the Bronx in New York City
  • Krister (Swedish) and Lowe (British)
  • Masters and Doctoral degrees in Social-Organizational Psychology from the Department of Organization & Leadership at Columbia University in New York.
  • Areas of study: Change Management and Conflict Management
  • First job after college in 1993 was teaching English to high school teachers in P.R. China
  • Spent 4 years working on an SAP IT change implementation where I discovered organizational psychology and behavior
  • Started Masters Degree in 1998
  • Started Doctoral Degree in 2001
  • Started a boutique consulting firm in New York City in 2003, C Global Consulting
  • 2004 won a four year contract with the United Nations providing capacity-building in the area of Conflict Resolution for UN staff globally
  • Consulting to professional services firms, financial services firms, pharmaceuticals, foundations, non-profits and educational institutions.
  • Delivering training, group facilitation (small and large), consulting and increasingly in individual and team coaching over the last 15 years.
  • Last few years getting increasingly involved in the coaching field.
  • 3 to 4 years ago began providing certification to coaches in partnership with the Columbia University Coaching Certification Program in a psychometric assessment called the NBI® Thinking Preferences Assessment. It is a cognitive-emotional styles assessment that can be helpful to coaches. Helps coaches understand themselves better as well as adapt to different styles of their coaching clients.
  • Pursuing coach training through the Coaches Training Institute.
  • Have introduced and implemented coaching and team coaching programs in organizations.
  • Have been coaching leaders and managers as well as their teams.
  • Finding the coaching work the most meaningful that I do.
  • I’m an adjunct faculty member at New York University where I teach a graduate course on Group Facilitation skills to Master’s Degree students.

  • Been wanting to get into podcasting for a while: have been a consumer of podcasts for a while
  • Podcasting is a great way to reach a broader audience
  • But why team coaching specifically?
    • Within the explosive field of coaching, team coaching has received relatively little emphasis.
    • 2013 literature review article on “Team Effectiveness and Team Coaching” in The Journal of Coaching: The International Journal of Theory, Research and Practice. Cited a 2009 lit review of the more than 500 empirical studies on coaching at the time. Only 6 focused on team coaching.
    • So while coaching as a field has exploded, the research, theory and practice on team coaching hasn’t received much emphasis.
    • Coaching leaders and managers is sexy, but a leader and manager doesn’t exist without a team. Our emphasis is perhaps upside down. We should be looking at the team first and then the role that the leader plays within that context.
    • Need to turn up the volume on the role that teams play on organizational outcomes.
    • I acknowledge that most of my team coaching opportunities come as a result of first coaching a leader and manager which creates the trust to discuss coaching the team in turn.
    • Have found myself in recent years supporting a lot of coaches who, as a result of coaching leaders and managers, end up getting asked to work with their respective teams and often feeling ill-equipped to do so.
    • Coach training programs may not be preparing people fully for working with groups and teams.
    • Working with teams and groups can be intimidating and even “terrifying”. It can be complex coaching a group.
    • The risks are significant but so are the rewards.
    • The promise of teams: teams can accomplish things that individuals often can’t
    • Many organizations are organized around working groups and individuals rather than teams and spend a lot of money on leadership and management development programs but don’t spend nearly as much on team development.
    • When teams struggle then consultants are often brought in to do some kind of teambuilding intervention.
    • Interesting that we have a lot of year long leadership development programs in companies but we don’t see an analogue for that in year long team development programs.
    • Team coaching seems to be a huge opportunity.
    • After interviewing many people in organizations, I often hear that people long to be part of something greater than themselves, to be part of a team that contributes something extraordinary. People want to be part of teams.
    • Modern day challenges can only be solved through the creative collective abilities of groups and teams.
    • The trends in leadership develop are shifting from a focus on developing heroic leaders to developing leadership cultures. Trends in the future unfolding, the need for teams and desire for teams is only going to increase.
    • I’ve become a bit dissatisfied after 20 years with delivering training and teambuilding “events” that don’t effect real change.
    • While training and teambuilding events have a role to play, they often fall short of creating the results people expect.
    • I’ve spent a lot of time in the last 15 years working in the area of conflict resolution with individuals, leaders, and teams and find that much of the conflict is rooted in the poor setup, leadership and implementation of teams.
    • We fail to address the structural causes of conflict and dysfunction in groups and instead throw training and teambuilding solutions at them.
    • My doctoral dissertation was on “Conflict Climates in Organizations” and it focused on these themes.
    • I’m finding in my own practice that my work is most meaningful when I work with a leader and team over time as a “process” rather than an “event.” That is what I want to explore in this podcast.
    • Summary: need to turn up the volume on coaching teams, group and systems.


  • Rather than prescribe one approach to team coaching, we are going to explore a diverse range of approaches and experiences with real team coaches
  • What are team coaches really doing, what are they finding and learning?
  • The Team Coaching Field is the relatively new. Now is a good time to explore a range of approaches. A pioneering time now.
  • Interviews will be the focus where we will try to unpack the tips, tools and techniques team coaches use.
  • We will explore stories of success and failure, “Hits and Misses”, of real team coaching engagements
  • Team coaching is really dynamic so we need to really reflect on stories of success and failure so we can accelerate learning
  • Structure of each episode:
    • 45 minutes to 60 minutes
    • Beginning: getting to know the team coach
    • Middle: stories of hits and misses, heart of the interview, identify tips and techniques
    • End: find out what the team coach is working on now that excites them, part advice, suggested resources or tools, etc…
